The members of USW Local 9042-23 have approved a new five-year collective agreement that brings overall improvements to 114 workers at NTN Bearing in Mississauga, Ontario.

Employers began to bargain, demanding the stability of the five-year agreement, which is longer than the union’s preference for three-year contracts. Thanks to the unity of the workers behind the negotiating committee, the union can obtain good wage increases and other improvements in exchange for longer-term returns.

The union negotiated an agreement to increase wages by 2.75% each year for the first three years and 3% each year for the fourth and fifth years. The total wage increase was 14.25%.

The workers approved the new agreement with 80% of the votes.

Workers who make bearings, constant velocity joints, and other precision industrial and automotive equipment successfully bargain, speed up the process of the highest wage rate in many job categories, and reduce the time for someone to get the highest wage rate to 36 from 48 months .

The new agreement increases premiums for afternoon and midnight shifts. Employers increase the cost of buying safety boots every year.

Other areas where progress has been made include massage benefits and vision care. The new contract maintains 100% of the benefits paid by the employer. The union successfully resisted the employer's proposal of 80-20 co-payment, and employees will pay 20% of the welfare cost.

USW Local 9042, Unit 23 Division President Janet Moffat (Janet Moffat) said: "We have been working hard during the pandemic and have not stopped." "We are recognized as one of NTN's top factories in North America. COVID-related incidents are the fewest. We need companies to recognize that we are working with them and be appreciated for continuing to manufacture bearings during this difficult time."

The negotiating committee successfully negotiated one paid sick leave in the first year of the transaction, and successfully negotiated two paid sick leaves in the second year within the agreed period.

"Congratulations to the members of NTN Bearing's USW Local 9042-23. Through solidarity, they were able to negotiate a salary increase in an all-round way, which is a testament to their hard work and determination," said Marty Warren, USW 6 District Director.

Union education and political action are two ways to help end violence.

USW Local Union 9329 represents service staff and registered nurses in a long-term care home in rural Ontario.

At the Highland Valley Copper Mine in British Columbia, parents who return to work after taking maternity and parental leave can get a safe place provided by their employer where they can suck and store breast milk. This is an initiative of the local women’s committee.

Denis Grenier of Local 9996 was selected as the recipient of the 2021 USW Cares Jefferson Award for District 5 because he founded the non-profit Cancer Fermont.

Laura Drennan, a member of United Steel Workers (USW) from Logan Lake, British Columbia, was selected as the recipient of the 2021 USWCares Jefferson Award for her long-term community service.
